Aging Eyelids
As a person grows older, the skin loses its elasticity and tone and facial fat and bone are reabsorbed, creating decreased volume. These natural changes result in heaviness and drooping of the upper eyelid skin, protuberance of fat pads in the upper and lower eyelids (causing bulging of the lids), and wrinkling and thinning of the eyelid skin. These changes are accentuated by sun exposure, smoking, stress, and significant weight loss.
Reducing the sagging skin and puffiness of the upper eyelids and puffiness and wrinkling of the lower eyelids can dramatically reduce the appearance of tiredness and make you look much younger.
The treatment options for the eyes consist of techniques to lift the lids (blepharoplasty), lift the droopy brow (browlift), fill the lost volume of the lower lid (tear trough correction with fat grafting or hyaluronic acid fillers), and improve the skin (laser resurfacing).
Dr. Ilya Reyter specializes in performing eyelid blepharoplasty surgery using only local anesthesia, thereby eliminating the risks associated with general anesthetics. For the upper eyelids, a small strip of skin and the underlying fat are removed, and the incision is hidden in the eyelid crease. In most cases, the upper eyelid surgical incision heals very well, leaving almost no trace of the surgery. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can usually be performed through transconjuctival approach, using a hidden incision, leaving no visible scar on the lower eyelid. The wrinkles on the lower eyelid are then removed by resurfacing with the Active FX laser to produce tightening of the lower eyelid and textural improvement of the skin.
Recovery from blepharoplasty typically takes only a few days, and most patients return to their normal activities very soon after the procedure. Minor swelling and bruising are the most commonly reported side effects of the procedure, and post-operative pain, if present, is usually very minimal. In fact, most patients report that they need no pain medications after the surgery.
