As we age, our skin begins to show fine lines and wrinkles and loses its natural tone and elasticity. These changes occur as we lose collagen and elastin fibers present in the skin. The loss of these vital skin proteins is accelerated by chronic sun exposure, smoking, and stress.
Additionally, over time, the skin produces fewer cells and repairs damaged cells more slowly, resulting in the appearance of thinner, more dry and rough looking skin. Increasing rigidity, inelasticity, and a decrease of dermal collagen and elastin fibers mean the skin begins to wrinkle and sag.
The face also loses volume over time, as bone and fat are reabsorbed. This causes the face to “deflate” and the skin appears to sag as the volume is lost.
